Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops: A Guide to this Ophthalmic Medicine

Understanding the Composition of Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops

Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops, also known as Pyriproxyfen, is a medication primarily composed of 1-hydroxy-5-oxo-5H-pyrido[3,2-α]phenoxazine-3-carboxylic acid. This active ingredient plays a crucial role in the treatment of early senile cataracts.

How Pyriproxyfen Works

The mechanism of action of Pyriproxyfen is based on the quinone theory. According to this theory, the formation of cataracts is due to the abnormal metabolism of nucleic acids (tryptophan, tyrosine, etc.) which produce quinone substances that cause denaturation of the water-soluble proteins in the lens, leading to the formation of insoluble protein. Pyriproxyfen, through its competitive inhibition of quinone substances, helps maintain the transparency of the lens and thereby slows down the progression of cataracts.

Indications and Uses

Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops are specifically indicated for the treatment of early senile cataracts. This stage of cataracts is characterized by a gradual loss of transparency of the lens in the eye, which can lead to blurred vision.

Important Precautions

It is essential to be aware that Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops should only be used topically. The medication should be administered by gently squeezing the dropper to place one drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye, usually twice a day, or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Adverse Reactions and Allergies

While the incidence of adverse reactions has not been systematically investigated, potential side effects may include allergic reactions such as conjunctivitis and contact dermatitis. Eye-related side effects can also occur, including superficial keratitis, conjunctival hyperemia, irritation, itching, blurred vision, discharge, lacrimation, eye pain, and a foreign body sensation. If these symptoms occur, it is important to discontinue the medication and consult a healthcare professional.

Contraindications

Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops are contraindicated in individuals who are allergic to any of its components.

Storage and Use

Pyriproxyfen Eye Drops should be stored at temperatures between 1 to 25°C. After dissolution, the medication should be stored in the refrigerator at temperatures between 1 to 15°C, away from light, and used within two weeks.
